Joe Bashour, father of seven, began his interest in photography in the 1960s with the purchase of his first camera. Throughout his decades of photography, Joe has evolved into a versatile photographic artist equally engaged in the genres of landscapes and nature, cityscapes and monuments, and portraiture. Joe's large collection of images, only a portion of which are displayed here, spans the development of photography from analog to the digital age. He has always worked in color, believing it an equally important aspect of imagery along with light and shadow. A colorful collection of dozens of intimate, close-up photos of flowers, many of which are seen here, came out of his last decade's work. More recently, Joe focused on creating a catalogue of individual portraits of all ages, with special emphasis on senior citizens, whose images he has been able to capture in a strikingly beautiful, 3-dimensional way. Joe's photos have also captured hundreds of major landmarks and monuments throughout the United States in recent historical and present times. Having retired from a career in product and industrial design and engineering, Joe is able to devote his time to pursuing his photographic art. Joe Bashour lives in Middletown, RI, just north of Newport. His images have joined other local photographers at the Newport Art Museum, and have hung on display at the Newport Public Library, the Portsmouth Public Library, two local senior centers, local cafés, and the Newport Art Gallery. Joe's images have sold on greeting cards, have been published in the Newport Daily News, and grace the walls of many private homes. Joe Bashour is a member of the Newport Photo Guild. An exhibition of Joe's senior portraits, entitled "Seniors of Aquidneck Island," was on display at the Newport Art Museum, Coleman Gallery in Newport, RI in the fall of 2011. The Newport Daily News featured Joe on the front page in an article about the senior citizens' portraits. The exhibit was a big success and Arleen Kaull, director of the Middletown, RI Senior Center said, "what (Joe has) done is amazing. It was such a great idea. (The seniors) have so much to offer and I think these photos go a long way to help illustrate their importance." Since then, Joe Bashour continues to exhibit his works in many different shows at various locations.
